10 Pieces of Moto Gear I Actually Use in Mexico (and Why)

Updated: Sep 8

Riding style & conditions: I’m a solo rider on a 900cc Triumph Bonneville/Street Twin. I do long days across heat, altitude, rain, and the occasional flood. Think: topes, dust, jungle humidity, mountain chill, and “why is my visor a bug cemetery?” Everything below has survived real miles and earned its place on my list of favourite pieces of motorcycle gear.

My Current Setup Favs (Quick Links)

Mosko Moto Nomax Tank Bag

1) Mosko Moto Nomax Tank Bag (with hydration)

Why it’s a keeper: Layered pockets, 2L hydration sleeve, and clever micro-details (SIM ejector in the zipper, whistle in the clasp). This is my cockpit: chapstick, snacks, tools, and that microfiber towel for bug-splats.

Mexico win: Hands-free water + everything at your fingertips at fuel stops.

2) REV’IT! Women’s Fly 3 Gloves

Why it’s a keeper: They actually fit; protection where it counts but still nimble for hours on the controls. Great for summer and shoulder seasons.

Mexico win: Breathable in heat; tough enough for surprise moments. Not waterproof—

Rain hack: I pull dish gloves over top. Silly? Effective.

3) Arc’teryx Beta AR (GORE-TEX) Shell

Why it’s a keeper: My lifer jacket for mountains and Vancouver rain now doubles as my moto monsoon shell.

Mexico win: When the sky dumps, my top half stays dry. (The crotch? Different saga.)

4) Loop “Experience” Earplugs

Why it’s a keeper: Cuts wind roar so I can hear myself think—or queue up Spotify—without helmet hot spots. Comfortable 8+ hours riding and even for sleep (off the bike of course).

Mexico win: Less fatigue, less tinnitus, more focus on the road.

5) Quad Lock + Waterproof Wireless Charging Head (+ Vibe Dampener)

Why it’s a keeper: Wireless is key—cables + rain = fried ports. The vibration dampener protects phone cameras. I tried RAM; my phone slipped, buttons got mashed, and one lost rubber bit ruined the mount. Quad Lock just works.

Mexico win: Rough roads, sudden showers, fast nav, charge and ride—sorted.

6) ROK Straps (1” for load security)

Why it’s a keeper: Fast, simple, secure. My duffels don’t budge—even on washboard. I carry a couple sizes; 1” are daily drivers.

Mexico win: Quick bag loading in the heat and rain without roadside re-tying. They don't snap back on my fingers.

7) Cardo Packtalk Edge (Comms)

Why it’s a keeper: The Dempster run to the Arctic Ocean sold me. Now it’s mom calls and shuffling Spotify when the miles stretch long.

Mexico win: Hands-free nav prompts, music, quick calls when plans shift.

8) Dainese Women’s Air Frame D1 Mesh Jacket

Why it’s a keeper: Best mesh fit I’ve found—armor lands where it should, and I can move. Wind flows; sun stays off.

Mexico win: Hot-weather comfort without feeling under-armored.

9) The North Face Base Camp Duffel

Why it’s a keeper: Bombproof and lashable, with many attachment points; I’ve dragged it through airports and Chiapas washboards. Still trucking.

Mexico win: Swallows gear, shrugs off rain/dust, and straps down beautifully with ROKs.

10) Kryptonite Disc Lock (Security)

Why it’s a keeper: Visible deterrent that buys time and peace of mind. I use it for quick stops and any overnight without locked parking.

Mexico win: Opportunistic theft exists everywhere. Make yours the wrong target.

Extra security hack: Pair it with an ugly old motorcycle cover for camo.

That’s my setup for Mexico, but gear is a bit like tacos: everyone has their secret ingredient. What’s the one piece you never leave home without?

2019 - My very first setup, which has evolved in a few ways since.

Packing Pairings I Swear By

  • Monsoon mode: Beta AR shell + dish gloves over the Fly 3s.

  • Heat dome days: Dainese mesh + hydration in the Nomax.

  • Navigation stack: Quad Lock + Cardo voice prompts = fewer wrong turns.

  • Loadout: Base Camp Duffel + 1” ROK Straps; disc lock lives in the tank bag for quick grabs.

Real Talk on Fit (Women’s Gear)

Women’s motorcycle gear is still catching up. If it fits and performs, it stays. The pieces above do both.

About Me

IMG-20230402-WA0051_edited_edited.jpg

I first rolled into Mexico in 2001, crossing the border by car and catching the bug for the open road. A few years later, I lived in San José del Cabo for a year, then road-tripped my way across the country until, in 2019, I found my true ride: exploring Mexico by motorcycle. Since then, I’ve clocked over 55,000 km through mountains, deserts, jungles, and coasts, and have still only scratched the surface. Now I call Mérida, Yucatán my part-time base, where I’m opening a coworking space for digital nomads when I’m not chasing tacos, dodging topes, and finding the next great ride.
